Remove a server from InfraNest (or delete it for real)

There are two different things people mean by "remove this server", and only one of them stops the bill.

Removing a server from InfraNest can mean two very different things β€” and only one of them actually stops the bill. This article is for anyone who needs to get rid of a server, whether that means destroying it for good or just tidying up their InfraNest list.

Overview

Every server in InfraNest also exists at your provider β€” Hetzner, TransIP, OVHcloud. So there are really two separate questions: do you still want the machine, and do you still want to see it here?

  • Delete server β€” the machine is destroyed at your provider. Everything on it is gone, and you stop paying for it. This cannot be undone.
  • Stop tracking β€” the machine keeps running and your provider keeps charging for it. It just disappears from InfraNest: no monitoring, no alerts, and it stops counting toward your costs. You can bring it back whenever you like.

If you want to stop paying, use Delete server. If someone else looks after that machine, or you simply don't want it cluttering your list, use Stop tracking.

WarningDeleting a server destroys it at your provider immediately. Everything on it is gone, and this cannot be undone.

Delete a server permanently

  1. Open the server you want to remove.
  2. Go to the Power tab.
  3. Click Delete server.
  4. Type the server's name to confirm, as shown in Type {name} to confirm:.
  5. If your organisation requires it, confirm with your passkey, authentication code or password.

The server is destroyed at your provider straight away.

Stop tracking a server

  1. Open the server, then go to the Power tab β€” or use the β‹― menu next to the server in the Servers list.
  2. Click Stop tracking.

No confirmation code is needed, because nothing happens to the machine itself β€” it keeps running and your provider keeps billing for it.

Track a server again

  1. Go to Servers.
  2. Click the Not tracked button above the list.
  3. Find the server and click Track again.

Its history, tags, custom fields and settings all come back with it.

Tips

NoteUntracking a server doesn't reach your provider in any way β€” the invoice does not change. Use the Not tracked view to check what you've left behind and make sure nothing is quietly still running (and billing) without you noticing.

Troubleshooting

The Delete server button is disabled. The server likely has delete protection switched on β€” you'll see Delete protection is active. Turn this off first. Stop tracking still works even with delete protection on, since it doesn't touch the machine.

There's no Delete option for my OVHcloud server. An OVHcloud VPS is a subscription with a notice period rather than something that can be switched off instantly, so InfraNest doesn't offer a Delete button for it. Cancel the VPS in the OVHcloud panel first, then use Stop tracking here.

I deleted the server but I'm still being billed. Volumes, IP addresses, snapshots and backups are billed separately by your provider. Deleting the server doesn't necessarily delete them β€” check Volumes, IP addresses, Snapshots and Backups afterwards if you want everything gone.

Both actions are recorded in your Audit Log, including who did it and when.
