Drop-catching is the automated or manual process of acquiring a domain name immediately after it is released back to the registry following expiration and non-renewal. When a domain owner fails to renew before expiration, the name enters a defined lifecycle: grace period, redemption grace period (typically 30 days during which the original owner can still recover it), pending delete (usually 5 days), and then deletion from the zone.
Once deleted, the domain becomes available for new registration. Drop-catchers—services or registrars with specialized infrastructure—monitor the exact moment of release and submit registration requests (via EPP <create> commands) at millisecond precision. Because thousands of registrars may attempt to claim the same domain simultaneously, success depends on submission timing and the registry's release mechanism. Some registries use randomized or batch processing rather than pure first-come-first-served to distribute opportunity more fairly and reduce network load.
